Leeds resident who was first black officer of Homewood Police dies at 75

Jessie Mack, who was the first black officer of the Homewood Police Department, has passed away. Mack was a resident of Leeds and was 75.

A story by AL.com reports that Mack joined the Homewood police force in 1974 and retired in 2006. Afterwards he served as a Municipal Court bailiff starting in 2011 until his recent passing from cancer.

According to the report, he was beloved and respected by his peers in the police force. The Homewood Police Department has expressed their intention to bury Mack with police honors with permission from his family.
