Greenwave wins final home game 23-8 against Childersburg

Greenwave wins last home game 23-8.

Leeds Greenwave finished the 2018 home games with a 23-8 win against Childersburg.

Leeds led Childersburg the entire game. The offense played strong with Jakobi Hunter scoring two touchdowns and Omar Conley scoring one. The defense held Childersburg to only one touchdown and a two-point conversion.

Kicker Steven Huddleson landed a field goal with 35 seconds left in the first half.

Friday night’s game was also Senior Night, when the Greenwave honors their graduating seniors Friday night before the last home game of the season.

Leeds recognized about 25 seniors on the football team, cheerleaders and marching band.

Coach Lee Gibson said he is extremely proud of the team.

“We talked all week about making sure we sent our seniors off with a win on senior night. This team has shown great growth this year and has stayed true to the process. They have handled all the adversity we faced and bounced back each week and improved every day. Could not be prouder of a group of seniors for their leadership and dedication to our team,” he said.

We were able to control the game by running the football effectively and efficiently, Gibson said. Jakobi Hunter had a great night (2 rushing TDs) and this was made possible by the offensive line. Senior Maliek Evans and junior Zach Niles lead the way on the offensive line, he said.

Eighth grade QB Jarod Latta started his third game and played very well, Gibson said. “He was able to make sure good throws to Nick Armstrong and Omar Conley all night,” he said. “Jarod found Omar in the end zone in the first quarter for a TD and was able to keep some drives going all night by making key completions.”

Defensively we improved again this week, he said. “We had great performances from Davonte Green, Dee Voltz, Jacob Cain, Justin Pettus, and Zach Abernathy. Also thought Alphoncie Hopson had a great night defending their best receivers,” Gibson said.

“I was also very proud of our kicker Steven Huddleston, who made a key field goal to end the first half,” he said.

Gibson want to say a special thanks to all fans who have supported Leeds all year and to the student section who have been great all year.

The Greenwave finishes the 2018 football season next Friday at Pleasant Grove.
